Treat yourself to a low-cost, self-directed residency

Introducing The Hideout Residency Program

Are you a writer, artist, academic, yoga/meditation teacher, or health-wellness practitioner (therapist/counsellor, massage therapist or body worker) looking for some quiet time to work on your craft, dive deep into a project, or nourish your own artistic or self-care practise? Hoping to get away for dedicated quiet time free of distraction?

We’ve created the Hideout Residencies just for folks like you.

Here’s how it works. Both the Hideout Cottage and The Tryon Suite are available for select dates in the shoulder season each spring and fall for low-cost, self-directed solo residencies. Writers and other residents should plan to work on a project or engage in practise for a minimum of one week (6 nights). Residents will arrive on a Saturday afternoon and depart the following Friday morning. Both units feature queen-sized beds and bedding, self-catering kitchens, wifi access, yoga mats and props, space to write and practise, outdoor space, and access to trails and bicycles. Because of the rural nature of The Hideout, residents should normally plan to have their own vehicle for the duration of their stay. Please note that the residency program is designed for solo writers and practitioners only. If you wish to travel with a partner, family member, or friend, consider visiting The Hideout during our summer vacation period.

More information is available at our FAQ page. We highly recommend that all prospective applicants read this information before applying.

To apply for a residency, get in touch to tell us about yourself, your proposed project and your preferred residency time slots. You may wish to indicate an alternate date. Feel free to include supporting material such as a CV, website links, and a brief sample of writing or other creative work, though these are not strictly required. We’ll follow up with more information, and if we have a place, we’ll ask you to confirm your spot with a non-refundable $175 (+HST) deposit which will be deducted from the total cost of your residency week. The remainder of your fees will be due 30 days before your arrival.

If money is an issue, the Susan Buchanan Hideout Scholarship is awarded each year to an emerging or established writer, artist, or wellness practitioner residing in the Maritime provinces (PEI, NB, or NS). Winner of multiple Island Literary Awards, as well as a PEI Book Award, Susan Buchanan was a well-loved and deeply admired Island writer and disability rights activist who co-owned a bed and breakfast called Evening Primrose on the Hideout property in North Tryon with her life partner Jeanne Sullivan.

Scholarship recipients will still be responsible for travel and food costs. We welcome applications from all. Folks who identify as BIPOC or 2SLGBTQ+ are especially encouraged to apply. Be in touch to discuss accessibility questions and concerns.

The scholarship deadline for 2025 is March 1. After this date, we will review all scholarship applicants and select one recipient, based on a combination of financial need and project proposal. For writers and artists, please send us a short (up to five-page, or up to five images) writing or portfolio sample (preferably related to your project), a short (250 word) synopsis of your project, and why being selected as a Hideout resident is important to you. For wellness practitioners, please send us a resume and short (250 word) biography, as well as an outline of how you intend to use your residency time to support your practise and foster self-care. Please include Hideout Residency in the subject line of your email.

Two years ago I began working on a young adult fiction novel Dear Lisa. Winning the residency at The Hideout provided me with the ideal opportunity to reacquaint myself with the story and characters. Trevor and Joshua ensured that I had everything I needed to allow me to immerse myself in the creative process. I would highly recommend The Hideout to anyone in need of a retreat and some time to relax and unwind.”

-Debbie Langston, 2022 Hideout residency scholar

The Hideout was the high point of my 2020. The cozy facilities, idyllic Lords Pond watershed, and gracious hosts offer a truly enriching space in which I could reflect, recuperate, and make substantial strides in my writing. I could not more highly recommend this residency.
