What are The Hideout Residencies?

As writers and wellness practitioners, we understand the need to retreat to somewhere quiet, free of distraction, to spend time diving deep into a project or personal practise. We wanted to share the solitude, beauty, and creative energy of The Hideout with others.

Why are the residences one week long?

The Hideout Residencies are modelled after other national and international residency programs. The minimum stay for a resident is one week (six nights). If you’re looking for a shorter stay, consider staying at The Hideout during the high season (late June to early September), when our minimum stay is two nights. However, prices are higher during this time.

Can I arrive at another time besides Saturday?

All confirmed Hideout residents must plan to arrive on a Saturday after 3 PM, and check out the following Friday before 11 AM..

What’s included in the price of the residency?

Both the Hideout Cottage and The Tryon Suite have queen-sized beds, fully equipped kitchens, yoga mats and props, complimentary coffee and tea, en suite bathrooms with amenities, and wifi access. Residents have full use of The Hideout grounds and gardens, including access to neighbouring Lord’s Pond and its trails. We’re also totally happy to help you connect with local writing, arts, wellness, and community groups and venues on the Island. Laundry facilities available upon request and advance notice.

What’s not included?

Residents are responsible for their own transportation to and from The Hideout, and for all meals and personal amenities.

How do I get to The Hideout?

The Hideout is located on PEI’s South Shore, a ten-minute drive from the Confederation Bridge and thirty minutes from the city of Charlottetown. Residents normally should plan to have their own vehicle for the duration of their stay.

Is there anything to do nearby?

The Hideout is located in rolling countryside, just outside the village of Victoria-by-the-Sea, which has a cafe and several restaurants, plus a score of local artisan and antique shops. The village of Crapaud has a bank, post office, pharmacy, and general store. Nearby South Shore beaches include Victoria Beach, Argyle Shore, and Chelton Beach. The Hideout is a short drive from PEI’s best hiking and mountain biking trails. Major national grocery store and fast food chains are located in the cities of Summerside and Charlottetown, each about half an hour away from the Hideout. Get in touch with specific questions.

Can I bring my partner, friend, or child?

The Hideout residencies are designed for writers, artists and practitioners to enjoy solo time to work on a project or practise. If you’d like to travel with your partner, friend, or child, consider coming during the summer months, during our regular vacation rental period.

What about pets?

Due to allergies, we are not able to accommodate pets at The Hideout.

How do I apply?

To apply for a residency, get in touch with your preferred dates, tell us a little bit about your project, and let us know why you feel a Hideout residency is right for you. A non-refundable and non-transferable deposit of $175 (+HST) is required to confirm your preferred dates, with the remainder due 30 days prior to your arrival.

What happens if I need to cancel my residency?

Due to extremely limited residency capacity and the costs of administering, promoting, and marketing the residencies, the $175 residency deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. Cancellations made more than 30 days prior to your residency dates will be subject to a full refund minus the residency deposit. Cancellations made less than 30 days but more than 7 days prior to the residency will be subject to a 50% refund minus the residency deposit. Cancellation made less than 7 days prior to residency dates will not be eligible for a refund. Under extraordinary circumstances (such as lockdowns and travel restrictions that prevent travel), residents may be eligible to alter their residency dates, subject to availability.

What about the scholarship?

We are pleased to offer one full scholarship, covering the cost of Hideout residency fees only. Scholarship recipients will still need to cover the cost of travel, food, and local transportation. The deadline to apply for the scholarship in 2024 is March 1. After this date, we will review all scholarship applications. A residency spot will be offered to one applicant based on a combination of financial need and an exceptional project proposal.
